Recently grown tired of hearing variations of this kind of supercilious line: "If we [Developers] didn't write bugs, you [Testers] wouldn't have a job.."
When you had your wits about you, just wondering what - when in similar situations (under similar provocation) - you guys said in retort?..
approved. Moved to Chat. Thanks Joe! Great slideshow!
Why are you tired of that?In similar situations, I've said something along the lines of "Great! I like my job and thanks to all of you, I never worry about losing it!"(I've also said "We can't spell B GS without U!" See: All Things Quality: Slideshow: Optimistic Developers, Pessimistic Testers )

It depends if I want to be arsy or not. If the answer is yes then "Hey, if developers could test their own code there would not be a QA department in existance anywhere".
The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
I just tell them the ones who keep writing the majority of the bugs will not be working here much longer!
I consistently encounter (from I believe otherwise intelligent people) that we can somehow /test quality into/ the software.
"This code has a lot of bugs, if only we tested it more."
"This software is slow, we need to do more performance testing."
I once asked, "why do you write bugs instead of code that works?" after hearing a line similar to what you mentioned.
Nothing learns better than experience.
"So as I struggle with this issue I am confronted with the reality that noting is perfect."
Now wasting blog space at QAForums Blogs - The Lookout
It's sort of reminds me of the crimal who got caught and says: "without criminals the police and legal system would be out of business.".
I would be quick to say something like this "Well you know I get $10 for every bug I find over 100 in a week and the way you are going I'm going to be able to buy a new car in about a month." DOH!!!!!!!!!!!

True - "If we [Developers] didn't write bugs, you [Testers] wouldn't have a job.."
it is question of capability rather than choice
