Does this blow anyone else\'s mind?

"In a review by Motor Trend editor Scott Kanemura, it was revealed that the GPS system fitted to the GT-R would remove the 180-kilometer per hour (112 mph) speed limiter when the car arrives at a race track, but only on tracks approved by Nissan. "

It goes on to say that the "mechanism" would not be applied to US models of the car (it is apparently only built in Japan.)

But it just amazes me that a production car would be built that knows where it is, and limits its top speed accordingly.

Where does this stop?

Just go find someone who does tuning and can hack the GPS.
Or don't even get it put in. Ever heard of a "map".

Bonzai!!!!

If you're thinking that could spread to enforce speed limits...I don't think you need to worry about that. Governments want their revenues from speeding tickets, not for people to actually slow down.

Course...they could tweak it to auto-generate fines rather than limit speed.

Some car rental agencies have been doing that.

Just think, if the GPS's map is slightly off and while you are in the race, you run off the coordinates on the far turn. Suddenly, everyone’s passing you. Or rear-ending you.
Awesome!

Rich, that's prescient and hilarious!

In response to Jim, all these "intelligent devices" (such as speed limiters) are routinely hacked/modified/disabled by experts. But it just astounded me that an auto manufacturer would come up with something so, I don't know, focused.

Maybe we can put it all down to the Japanese personality (whatever that means)?

Yeah, you're on the straightaway passing the lead car and a little voice says, "LOST SATELLITE RECEPTION"!
