I've learned it's important to properly clean your estimates after you PDOOYA. As PDOOYA doesn't take very much time, management is likely to suspect that you did PDOOYA. So, if you spend some time sanitizing them, just to get rid of the odor you know, they have a better chance of being accepted on face value.
At least that's what I think. Management doesn't let me make estimates anymore.

It really depends what metrics you have at hand and a judgement call on complexity / size of your project ( that can be estimated using FPA). Most places I go to there are 0 metrics collected, where I am currently working my boss is a metric Nazi. We have a very accurate idea of test case executed / person / day..... but as for actual progress (and I always stress this to project mangler ) is determined by the level of risk and quality of the development process.
