Recently our department is doing some evaluation about perf test tools, including some appliances, such as from IXIA, Spirent Avalanche. I don't have experience about this kind of appliance. for some basic function, such as http, smtp related testing, seems both can meet. The sales engineer just tell the good aspect. Does anyone here have related experience? what's the advantage and disadvantage? Thanks!
My understanding is that appliances can generate more load, but you can do less scripting with them. So it depends on your requirements: how complex are your applications and how many users you are going to simulate.
When I want to learn about disadvantages I ask competitor's sales engineers ;-) After a few minutes of listening that they don't discuss competitor's product you will learn a lot of interesting. So call to software vendors.
Thanks, Alex, really good idea :-)
Currently seems both can meet our requirement, I mean load and virtual user scripting, since our client is not very complicated.
As I know, this kind of perf test appliances originally come from network device testing, router, switch or sth like that, now they are moving to application perf testing. Seems not widely used by app developing company. Is that right?
