# Thread: Logs analysis in order to calculate the concurrent access Rate

1. ## Logs analysis in order to calculate the concurrent access Rate

Hi,

I am currently working on the replacement of an old WEB application that is still in production. So I have logs of this application to help me define the different criteria for my future new application stress testing.
I have all the request dates [(day/month/year) + time (hour:minute:second)] for 2 months production to analyse.
I would like to define especially the concurrent access rate but I don't know how to get it from my logs.
Should I consider the number of request by second and take 10% as rate of concurrent access?
Do you know how I should proceed?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Regards
Jean-Guillaume

2. ## Re: Logs analysis in order to calculate the concurrent access Rate

You could start by collecting the following statistics

Find the average number of users logging in to your site in day = x

Find the average time spent by each user on the site = y

A day need not mean 24 hours so define the peak hours of your load maybe morning 2 hours or evening 2 hours.

say 4 hours in a day.

So try to figure out

x (number of users in day)/4 = numbers of users per hour

now let us say number of users per hour = 2000 users

on an average if a users spends 30 minutes

Then you would have 1000 concurrent users

1000 concurrent users * 30 minutes average time spent = 2000 users in an hour

Hope this helps, I read about this logic somewhere on the rational ibm tech support site.

Try searching the archives there there is some article by scott barber on user metrics that has a lot of helpful information.

There are a lot more things you may want to consider like some users leaving the site in between things like that.

Enjoy the experience

Should anyone suggest a good Log Analizer for a Performance Tester toolbox?

Natan: Specifically what articles you suggest from PerfTestPlus.com?

Hi everybody,

I would like to thank you for your replies.
All these articles are very interesting and help me a lot (for the parsing, I have done a lot with gawk wich is very usefull for this kind of data extraction work).

Best regards
