Web Based testing tools that spoof IP addresses

Can anyone point me in the direction of tools or techniques to loadtest web based applications that use IP addresses for their session management. I am currently using WebLoad and OpenSTA, but neither of these has this facility. The App Server that I am testing uses LDAP to authenticate and then assumes that all traffic from that IP address is from the same user.

Rational PerformanceStudio certainly supports spoofing IP addresses. (They call IP aliasing and it allows you to assign a diffrent IP address to every Virtual User)
We use this for all our tests for exactly the same reasons you described.

I do not know about other tools.

Hate to say I told you so, but you might as well hear it here first!

Empirix E-load tool has the facility for IP spoofing for any, some or all Virtual users
but requires a little bit of setting up.

    Competent administrator needed too!!

    (Skuse the above comment! ;+)

Re: Web Based testing tools that spoof IP addresses

Most of the major tools support use of multiple IP addresses from a single machine. This is not "spoofing" however -- it was called aliasing in a prior post on this thread -- you need to assign the IP addresses to the load machine first. It will then cycle through the IP addresses available to it in a manner determined by the tool you are using. This is a good thing to be doing and increases the realism of your load test.

On the other hand, IP spoofing is where you make the IP packets pretend that they have come from a machine that they did not. Spoofing is a technique used by hackers to throw off authorities trying to trace them, and / or to cause DOS attacks by forcing target machines to try to communicate with non-existent machines. Spoofing is a bad thing to be doing -- it's difficult to see a legitimate commerical reason to spoof unless you're testing a security product.

Unless you know better, of course :-)

Re: Web Based testing tools that spoof IP addresses

RadView now supports IP Spoofing as well. I believe they added this support with V4.6 or V5.0.
I would assume all the commercial tools do (I know for a fact that Mercury LoadRunner and Segue SilkPerformer also support it - Segue makes changing the IP Addresses on multiple NICs a breeze - they have a configuration tool that will do it for you - it is a bit more cumbersome with Radview).

Re: Web Based testing tools that spoof IP addresses

I should be noted that having to test from Multiple IP Addresses is not necessary for everyone - specifically if you are testing for a particular E-commerce site that uses full-NAT routing into the site or uses Load Balancing equipment runnin Full-NAT. With Full-NAT in place ALL traffic will appear to come from a single IP Address, that of the router or Load Balancer. Most Load Balancers support, and default to, a Half-NAT mode whereby the source MAC is preserved. For these cases - it is good to test using ranges, especially non-contiguous, IP Addresses - especially if you are testing applications that determine state which includes the Source IP.
Understand the network that connects to your Application to make the determination.

Sorry - hit send to fast - in the above post where I said "Source MAC" I meant "Source IP" - the source "MAC" is rarely presserved.
Moderator - if you can correct the above you can delete this wasteful post.

LoadRunner supports IP spoofing for both UNIX and NT based loadgenerators...
