    Open Source Load Testing Tool

    Hi all,

I'm looking for an open source load testing tool for a client server application. There are plenty of open source load testing tools for web based applications but I'm struggling to find one for a client server application.

    Does anyone know of any?

First question: What protocol is the client using to talk to the server?

    ODBC
    UDP
    ICMP

Just to add to my original question, it is on an SQL server, it's a visual basic application which uses SQLOLEDB to communicate to the database.

Re: Open Source Load Testing Tool

I have been searching as well. In particular, it has been hard for me to find what we need as all our pages contain dynamically generated fields. Thus when replaying the test script, they are unable to actually run properly as the field names are not the same.

I am using selenium to run regular test scripts which works great as I can specify the xpath to ensure the correct item is selected on the web page. However, selenium does not have any load testing capabilities.

Does anyone know of an open source load test tool (or something that is under $500) that would work for our scenario?

Re: Open Source Load Testing Tool

    Couple of my thoughts here,
JMeter can performance test the databases, but you need to check out if works with MSSQL.i think it should.
Also note that Since windows has its limitation where you cannot run more than one instances of Client server application,in most of the cases.you need to find some workaround for this.that might be the reason where you dont find more tools for client server stuff in opensource.
Check out for Grinder as well hope it can give some comfort. All these tool requires heavy coding and complete understanding of the application.
Webload is also one great tool for performance testing, and its now open source.

Basic winsocket support should be able to do this, however to figure out how the data hangs together within your traffic might be nasty.

Re: Open Source Load Testing Tool

I don't of any open source tool that can test client/server applications. However, you stated that your application uses a MS SQL Server database. Microsoft Visual Studio Team System for Testers probably can help you out here. It's not free, but compared to the typical load testing tools, it may prove to be a much lower price point.

Re: Open Source Load Testing Tool

    Besides WebLoad, OpenSTA and JMeter,
    curl-loader is an HTTP/S, FTP/S loading
    tool.
    http://curl-loader.sourceforge.net/

Just to ack, that I am biased towards the
    tool by being a co-author.

    Take care,
    Robert
