When does a performance tester begin his activity

    I'm new in the domain.
Through the live cycle of a development, when does a performance tester begin his activity?

Re: When does a performance tester begin his activity

When do you think it should begin? Are you assuming that the performance tester has a simulation tool?

Your answers are important and will help potential respondents give you some good ideas.

    Thanks!

Re: When does a performance tester begin his activ

I think the primordial tool for a tester is his brain.
And it should start working in the "gathering requirements" stage.
After that stage a performance tester will know the "big picture" of the sistem to apreciate the potential performance issues.

That sounds like a good general starting point. Perhaps this will help you get further and evolve more questions:

Scott, i'm sorry for my question on the forum... but I didn't saw a pragmatic aproach for this kind of testing in this kind of context.
I've read your articles, for me it was a good source of inspiration... and still are.
I'm working on a framework to do performance testing with unit tests... a hobby.

No need to be sorry - Scott was just being flippant. But his point is serious - a performance tester's (or ANY tester's) job starts at the very earliest stages possible.

My point was simply this. Sooner is better than later and I can come up with no good reason for waiting until someone (and it always seems to be someone other than the performance tester) decides that the application is ready to be performance tested.

In my experience, I serve a project better during the brainstorm and design phases than I do at the simulation and measurement phases. Why? Because during brainstorm and design, performance testing is prescriptive, proactive and preventative. During the simulation and measurement phases, performance testing is reactive and reveals problems that already exist rather than problems we'd rather not have in the first place.

There are many contexts where it is simply not possible to start that early (consulting being one of them, I don't start until the client calls me), so we learn to add value no matter when we start.

Sorry if my semi-serious sarcasm didn't translate well. Believe it or not, I'm language impaired (I think the only words I know in languages other than English are "yes, no, please, thank-you and beer"). I can't tell you how much respect I have for people who can speak more than one language!
