    Applications for memory leak testing

    Hi guys,

I have to recreate a scenario in which I have to test the performance of an aplication that runs for months and months and search for memory leaks.
Which aplications do you recomend to indentify these memory leaks?
The software under testing is a Java aplication that starts engines that execute diferent actions. It's all writen in Java and it could be started from the console or from the browser.

Re: Applications for memory leak testing

Generally to track down memory leaks, you will need the following:

    1) A test script with a good, broad coverage of the site that can have several concurrent users. The script needs to be written so the tester can turn sections of the test on and off. (So if the dev says "I think the leak is in "search", the script can quickly be configured to only hit "search")
    2) Someone monitoring the server for memory usage while the script is running.

I've found JMeter to be fabulous for this sort of testing.

Re: Applications for memory leak testing

A quick google finds plenty of tools for leak detection under Java. I'd tend to go for a white box solution, e.g. source based profiler, that can help isolating the problem to specific lines of code. One trick I use in this regard is to combine the use of a source profiler or debugger with a functional automation tool, such that you can detect leaks as part of your normal regression tests.
