I have installed Microsoft WAST on my computer to try it out for our plan to do load testing. I was going through the document and there i have read that i have to add several other counters...i tried to add them but it gives me the popup "Failed to load perf counters on computer <computer name>"
Sometimes Windows behaves erratically - and the performance registry can refuse to function correctly. This often happens when a machine has lots and lots of software installed and then uninstalled and then installed again on it - leading to a large and junk-filled registry.
My best advice is see if there are any errors in the system logs, which will probably tell you that there are bigger problems than just getting counter data accessible...

This problem occurred for me when not having the permissions on the server system. It was some time ago but I remember that we had to have admin permissions on the server. There was also a procedure on the microsoft site regarding this, although the procedure worked with mixed success. It might be worth (1) asking if any special restrictions are in place and (2) checking for the procedure on the MS site.
