    Performance profiling

    Hi,

    Can anyone tell me the differece between performance testing and performance profiling?

    Well, performance testing checks how the system behaves, while performance profiling checks where time is spent inside the system.

    Quite often (but not necessarily) performance testing happens under multi-user workload, while performance profiling with one-user load.

    Agree with Alex.
    Also, if you are interested in profiling, do take a look at some tools.
    Since java is my domain, I use JProbe and OptimizeIT. I am sure there are tools for .NET and C.

    A thing to remember is that profilers often place a large overhead on the system you are profiling and therefore avoid running a performance test with the profiler switched on.

    If you are working with C there are profilers available like Rational PurifyPlus
