I'm running OpenSTA (latest stable version) on Windows XP and experiencing some strange behavior. I'm wondering if anyone else can confirm these problems and/or offer any solutions.
Here are the symptoms:
In the test manager I hit the green start button. THe first few times I tried this all of the task groups started up simultaneously. Lately, however individual start buttons appear in the spreadsheet and none of the tests start without me clicking each one of them.
Furthermore, upon starting a second task group in one test the program crashes. I am prompted to send an error rerport. OpenSTA does not shut down, but it becomes apparent that the test is no longer properly executing. At this point the best course of action seems to be to close the test window, but not the entire Managaer. Upon re-opening the test from the folder list at the left, it appears as though the test has been running smoothly: the green running lights are lit up, etc. During the test I go to the Monitoring tab and and find that most of those reports don't load properly. Upon completion of the test, all of the reports appear blank. Very strange.
I've noticed one last issue regarding the NT performance plugin. I am able to create new Collectors and browse the available registers but i cannot add any of them to the collector. I select the register, click OK and nothing happens.
The strangest part of all of this is that all of this functionality (with the exception of the NT performance stuff) worked just fine when I had first downloaded the software. Then suddenly it stopped working correctly. I've reinstalled afew times and tried different mirrors and everything. I'm at a loss. Any help would be much appreciated.
A few of the MS security patches are the root cause of this and this has been noted via the OPENSTA mail list since late last year.
I went back to win2000 to setup a test lab a few months back as there seemed no other way to solve these problems and capturing HTTPS sessions.
If your pcs have been updated via windows update or a corporate update solution then this would be why the tool suddenly stopped working.
That would almost seem to be the reason, since I ran Windows update recently. However, I transeferred my tests and scripts over to a Win 2000 machine and got the same sort of bizarre behavior. Both these machines have had Windows update run on them. Is it Windows update that is the problem or XP?
not sure which particular update is the problem here,,,, not enough time to read all those MSDN reports.
I would try and reinstall after running windows update, also turn off any firewall running on the PC itself.
I hope that the next version of the tool will be XP and MS update friendly... its an excellant tool if youve got a little more time to script
