Intrested in network testing
Testers in the networking domain ,
I'm a performance tester working on LoadRunner from 2 years.
What are the specific skills i'll have to acquire in order to change my domain to network testing.
Secondly, will i have acceptability in the telecom industry since my background is different?
Thx in advance,
Re: Intrested in network testing
You're going to be moving down the stack, from workign with layers 4-7 of the OSI model, to workign with layers 2-4 (mostly) of the OSI model. There is a somewhat natural tool transition path, which allows you to hold your testing skills constant.
Ixia IxChariot is a layer 4 (session layer) network performance testing tool.
Both Ixia and Spirent offer chassis-based solutions with hardware load generators for the testing of network infrastructures up to wire-speed. To use these effectively you need to be able to use a sniffer (or equivalent) with aplomb, be able to discuss QOS and related topics and configure infrastructures for the same. A network hardware manufacturers high level certification (Cisco Engineer for instance) buys you aunion card to enter the rarified room of the network performance testers.
As with any performance testing effort which is new, ally yourself with a mentor who is conversant with the tools and the environment for your first couple of tests. After that, you should be fine.
