Testing Windows NT migration to 2003 Active Directory
What are the specific scenarios (including Security scenarios) to test when migrating from Windows NT to Windows 2003 Active Directory. It is a mission critical application ( three tier) and I am supposed to test the migration part as a QA Analyst. Can some body answer my query in detail and I would really appreciate if I could get a sample comprehensive Test Plan and a few test cases based on those scenarios. Your help is really welcomed if you let me know the sites or books where I can get the pertinent information
Re: Testing Windows NT migration to 2003 Active Directory
You would have to basically check for the application compatibility issues with the OS.
The Windows .NET Server 2003 is more secure, more reliable and different
Following might be the top areas that will affect the application compatibility :
- Removal of Legacy protocols and old runtimes
- Stricter access to OS Components
- Applications written to specific versions of Windows
So, many applications may require updates or new versions
Some of the specific compatibility issues are :
1. Changed DLL Search order
2. VB 5.0 runtime is not shipped as a part of Windows .NET Server 2003. For that you will have to include VB5 runtime (Msvbvm50.dll) as part of application installation or upgrade to VB6 or VB.Net
You can download the Application Compatibility Toolkit from MSDN website which contains tools like Application Verifier, Compatibility Administrator, and Compatibility Analyser along with some whitepapers on the link. Its a really wonderful tool once you know to use it
It verifies a good amount of bugs in AUT including many important issues like Heap Corruptions, General Compatibility Issues and some common security issues.
Here are some links where you can download the ppt and tutorials, whitepapers on the same.
For Application Compatibility Guide and toolkit, Google this search string:
"windows 2003 application compatibility guide"
Once you find it, the first result, you will also get link to download the toolkit.
