Low Battery OperationTesting
Does anyone have any good solutions for simulating a low battery condition in an embedded device?
I'm thinking about using a Power Supply with an adjustable Current Limit to simulate a dying battery's last current gasps. I'm pretty sure that simply lowering the voltage on a power supply does not simulate the Current/Power degradation of a dying battery.
Does anyone know of any tools or tricks that would work nicely for this?

Depends on what you are interested in testing. If you are testing the reaction of the software (functional level software testing), then in most cases I have run into, simply having the ability to simulate different voltage levels is sufficient, as that is the input that the devices use to determine device state. Talk to your developers and determine what they are using. If they have the typical setup where ALLOK = Voltage Greater than X, Degraded = Voltage between X and Y and Shutdown = Voltage below Y, (or maybe a couple of other steps), then what you are thinking about would be fine. If you are not testing the software functionality, or there is some more elaborate algorithm for device state then something else is warranted. Bottom line is start with the developers to see what the system is measuring and go from there.
