    Test tools for mobile app

This question has probably been asked before but I can't find a post that answers my question so here it goes :
Is there any automated test tool that can perform WHITE-BOX testing DIRECTLY on a mobile device (pocketPC, PDA, ...), not with a emulator or a simulator.

If there is such a tool, please let me know.

    Thanks.

On WinCE devices, yes (if you have enough resources and network connectivity). Others OS's... not that I know of.

I've done it with Rational, I can't think of a reason you can't do it with Mercury or Segue. The trick is installing the remote agent software on the device.

Re: Test tools for mobile app

I'd like to know how you get the agent installed on the WinCE device. I've contacted Segue and Rational in the past about WinCE testing. Neither company supported testing on WinCE. The agents that are supplied with their existing tools are compiled for PC only. Their are no agents that are compiled for the various CPU's supported by WinCE. Did Rational supply you with the source code to the agent so you could compile it for your platform? Even then you likely spent a fair amount of time porting the agent to work in the stripped down OS. Many Win32 API's are not supported in WinCE. I ended up writing my own test tool for WinCE. I started off using a PC to develop the agent on. I quickly learned that many things I could do on the PC I could not do in WinCE.

Re: Test tools for mobile app

For all intents and purposes, I got a "really smart guy" to write me a new test agent for the platform. Rational support was not involved. I have no idea what the level of effort was to do that.

Please note, I didn't say it was a recommended solution - the original poster asked if it could be done, not if we thought it was worth the effort.

There is also the Pocket PC Test Suite - http://www.softspb.com/products/testsuite/ -
have not tried it but in process of investigating it now. Also they have a pdf for download containing all the documentation. If you have found anything else useful, let me know, Cheers...

Re: Test tools for mobile app

    All,
I looked at the few available tools for WinCE automated testing. I was less than impressed with all of them. Most of them had similar flaws. The biggest problem I had was that the automation tool actually ran on the target device. This meant that your scripts, your data, logging and the tool itself used up storage on the device. Considering the general lack of extra memory on most PDA devices this was a critical problem in my mind. I was also looking for functionality similar to Seque Silk and other PC automation tools. Silk allowed you to record screen definitions and provide user-friendly names for the apps screens. Your tests would then perform actions on user-friendly names like "MAIN_MENU". None of the WinCE test tools had this functionality. We ended up developing our own tool. It took myself and another developer about 10-12 months to develop the tool. We have been using it for approx. 6 months now. I'm afraid that until Segue and Rational decide to support WinCE this is what most of you will have to do if you want a truely flexible, robust, etc test automation tool for WinCE. Good Luck!

    Don
