TP6 - SQL or Oracle DB?
I'm about to install TP6 having been using an evaluation licence for a while with an Access DB. I'd like to move forward using either Oracle or SQL Server to hold the scripts. We have both Oracle and SQL expertise in our company but not in the testing team. I'd prefer not to lose control of our databases to the DBAs, since I can foresee that our requests would be considered low priority, so I'd like to be able to maintain our databases ourselves, as we have been doing with the old Access databases we use for QARun. According to Compuware, most clients use SQL DBs, with a minority using Oracle.
I'd be grateful if those of you with experience of using TP6 with these 2 platforms could give me an idea of the pros and cons for each. For example, if most clients use SQL does that mean Compuware support for Oracle is not so good because they don't have so much practice in sorting out problems? Any difficulties you've come across would help me to make a more informed decision on which way to go.
Thanks for your help
Re: TP6 - SQL or Oracle DB?
I don't think that you would see any difference in support from one DB to the other, but you may have more problems with Oracle in general than you would with SQL Server.
Oracle drivers can be really flakey and are updated often. So you need to be careful and try to stay with one that works.
If your security conscious then Oracle is probably what you want. Personally I use SQL Server more often than Oracle just because it's easier for me to maintain and I don't really have to worry about any of my data being secure.
