Test Partner to SilkTest 2010
This is what I found out talking with Micro-Focus.
1. SilkTest Central (STC) Replaces QA Director. The biggest difference is STC can work with both Test Partner and Silk Test 2010. This means Silk Test Central can run Test Partner scripts. The only converting that needs to be done is with Manual Tests or if you are the only person in the world that used QA Director for anything but running scripts. That stuff would need to be converted.
2. They allow current Licenses to use the newer programs. Meaning because I already have a license for QA Directory I can use Silk Test Central. Really I can upgrade to Silk Test Central even if I'm on the QA Directors license.
I can download Silk Test 2010 if I have a license for Test Partner.
Really for this first stage they are kind of expecting people to use both. You keep Test Partner around but you use Silk Test 2010 to write and run new scripts.
I was excited about this.
3. Migrating Test Partner scripts to Silk Test 2010. Silk Test 2010 uses VB .NET. Right now there is no method (even from Microsoft) to convert VBA to VB .NET. This first stage was to get Slik Test Central to be able to read both. The next stage is to get Silk Test 2011? to convert or some type of Migration tool. At this early stage Micro Focus didn't really know how much Migration the tool would be able to do. It is still in Development, but they are working on something (not until next year).
The news seems to be as good as it get for moving to a different program.
We are going to get a demo of both Silk Test 2010 and Silk Central.
Then probably do a trial period. Then it would be moving over to Silk Central.
Then I need to see if I can get my company to move over to Windows 7 (IE 9) or do I stay on XP (IE 8) for another year.
Re: Test Partner to SilkTest 2010
In addition to Tubaloth's info. If your application requires Java recognition. Silk Test 2010 first release is not yet ready for that. Tech support tells me it should be ready in the R2 release by the end of the year.
