My company is about to purchase QARun. The main purpose of this will be the testing of 4GL programs (especially Visual Basic).
However, we also use a lot of applications created in UNIX/C and we will continue using + improving them.
I am wondering what the possibilities of QARun are for the testing of 3GL applications, and even apps that are character-based. Can QARun be used for testing 3GL?
QARun started with testing character based software. There is still a 'getting started' guide that comes with QARun which explains how to use QARun with character based applications through a terminal emulator.
I've found it awkward using QaRun to automate our applications that involve a terminal window.
Especially when it comes to retrieving information from the window. You always have to rely on the coordinates you used to draw the capture box, sometimes the data we need is larger than the box. This caused a problem. So we installed Perl for windows and used the Telnet.pm module. We coded the test in Perl and used QARun and QADirector to kick off the script. The Perl telnet.pm module is just like a virtual telnet session. The good thing about it is, when you issue a command the results or output is always returned in an array. And Perl is excellent for parsing this data for verification.
