Silktest and multiple browsers on one PC

I need to test a web app using Silktest, using Netscape
    3, 4, and 4.5, and Internet Explorer 3, 4, and 5. Therefore
I need to determine the minimum number of PCs are required
to support this activity (we are using Windows NT on
    all PCs).

If you can answer one or more of the following questions
    with CERTAINTY please reply:

    1. (a) Is it possible to RELIABLY install both Internet
Explorer 3.x and Internet Explorer 4.x on the
    same Windows NT 4.0 PC?

    (b) Does Silktest 2.1.4 support both IE 3 and IE 4 on
    the same PC?

    (c) Does Silktest 5.0 support both IE 3 and IE 4 on
    the same PC?

    2. I have installed both Netscape 3.04 and Netscape 4.08
on the same PC and used Silktest 2.1.4 successfully.

    (a) Is it also possible to RELIABILY install Netscape
4.5 on a PC with Netscape 3 and Netscape 4?

    (b) Does Silktest 5.0 support all three Netscape
versions (3, 4, and 4.5) on the same PC?

Re: Silktest and multiple browsers on one PC

    Hi,

I cant answer all of the questions but I will give a couple of answers.

    1) You can not have two versions of MS Internet Explorer installed on the same machine running concurrently. If you Install IE 3.0 and have the files for IE 4.0 on the workstation, the first time that you click on the IE Icon the OS will install IE 4.0 without prompts. You cannot even run IE 3.0 from my experience. If IE 4.0 is installed and you install IE 5.0 IE 4.0 doesnt work any more, however there is an option to return to your previous install. This means you could run a series of tests under 5.0 and return to the previous 4.0 install than repeat the tests. The only advantage I can see is that it will return you to the exact same setup you previously had installed. I personally just make separate configurations and create images for each machine, or separate drive to swap out.
    2) I have Installed Netscape 3.04, 4.08 & 4.51 on the same machine without any problems, the trick is to install them all into unique directories. The all appear to work just fine and they will maintain separate profiles in the registry.
    3) I havent gotten a chance to use the new release of Silk, but I was doing some beta testing on it. When I was testing, it did not yet work on Communicator 4.5 or IE 5. I am hoping that they have fixed these deficiencies.

    Good luck

Why not set up one "clean machine" and use ghost to revert to whatever you want installed and tested? I used to have dos, win3.11, win95, win95a, win95b, winnt4(sp3) and winnt(sp4) all on the same box. I see no reason why you couldn't start with the lowest browser version, install one at a time, ghost the machine after each install and then move one. For more info, look at http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/fs_ghost.html

Microsoft does have a patch available which allows you to install both IE4 and IE5 on the same PC simultaneously...
