    Whats new in SILK 6.0

    Hi,

I used SILK 5.0 two years back. Now the company for which I am working is planning on buying 6.0. My questions are

    1) How different is it?

2)The SILK guys claim that it is very easy to use and doesnt require extensive coding....is that true?

    Please give me ur opinions.

    Thanks

Re: Whats new in SILK 6.0

New features in SilkTest 6.0 include Workflow guides for creating tests, data driven tests, project management and scripting assistants such as AutoComplete.

Also it has updated few features for java add-ins.

    Hope it helps.

Now, that's funny. You did laugh at him, right?

Being familiar with 5.x, you'll be able to pick up with 6.0 with no problems.

Re: Whats new in SILK 6.0

Given that you have been using Silk, my guess is you will turn off the workflow toolbar. I can certainly see how it is helpful for new users of Silk, but for me, it consumes too much real estate, and gets in the way.

Some of the more heralded features of 6.0 are what Segue is calling AutoComplete. Each time you type a . the tool will offer you the list of valid options, very much like you see with other dev apps. A nice addition. Also, with the opening paren for a method or function, "(", you are presented the parameter list for what should follow. This is one of the most useful new features, in my experience. I find that I frequently cannot recall the order of parameters and this answers that need. For example, in ListFind, does the list come first, or the item I'm looking for in that list???

You will find some flakey issues with 6.0. A couple of examples; Silk will frequently ignore modifications to your code. Let's say you removed a code block that was causing some issues, saved, and reran the script. Silk will run as though the code block has not been removed. The frustating solution is to close Silk and reOpen it.

Another, similar one is the inability to set breakpoints in debug mode. This one is elusive, but frequent. I see it 10-12 times a day, and it seems to follow an errant run. Again, the solution is to close and reOpen Silk.

All in all, I'd say even with the issues 6.0 introduced, it is a significant step forward for Silk, and if you have the maintenance agreement in place, it is well worth the upgrade.

Oh, one other thing, and this probably goes to the funny statement in #2. Silk 6 will record declarations for you as you record a testcase. It's a neat idea in theory, but a little rough in practice. Over time, I'm betting it will get refined and more robust. This is probably what they were referring to.
