Load Testing a Website by \"Surfing\"

    [Question]
    All,
I was wondering if Segue had a canned test to simulate random browsing or surfing traffic on a website. I would like to test the Insider website for random surfing and see what loads the platform can take, but I don't know if a test script would accurately reflect 'surfing'. Would a test like this have a 'spider' that travels links all across the sites automatically to simulate random traffic?

Let me know if you find anything out - and see if you can find out how other companies simulate loads or test loads on their websites.

    Thanks,
    Dave.
    [Question/]

This question comes from a co-worker and I was asked to post the question here. I will also post this on the Silk Test page.

    Thanks for all your replies
    Bruce.

Re: Load Testing a Website by \"Surfing\"

I do this type of testing all of the time and have found that it can a very effective way of finding certain kinds of bugs.

For an experienced SilkTest person it is not very hard to do.

Unfortunately, there is no "canned" tool that does it automatically for someone with no experience.
As a practical matter, you will find that a completely dumb, random walk will probably get stuck in less significant areas.
A random walk with some weights that you can adjust to guide the activity works better.

Can you post your code or do you feel that recording a script and by back is the best way. I had a reply from the Silk Proformer you may want to look at. In short it numbers all the links and picked one and so on.

    Thank You for your reply,
    Bruce.
