I have used both and prefer silk. The version of winrunner I used is a few
versions old now tho. I used version 5.01 I believe. I am currently using

Very easy to learn
Good tech support
VB style Syntax
Very expensive compared to silk
Hard to customize
Had trouble with web stuff(I hear this has been greatly improved
Very strong and stable
Cheap compared to winrunner or rational robot
Ok tech support(sub-contracted to a firm in Ireland but the few
times I have called I got quick, knowledgeable answers)
C style syntax
Good web support

Stiff learning curve, I would recommend only for someone with a
Silk offers a load tool called silk performer that I have not used but is
supposed to be pretty nice. Mercury has one called Astra I believe. It is
specifically for web load testing. I have used and really like Rational
Robots load test tool. It managed datapools really well which worked good
for me. I was testing on a very dynamic website.
Silk is trying to start implenting other tools into silk. For instance
silk planner. It will match requirements with scripts. They have also
implemented a web based results reporting system.
As far as I know mercury doesnt tie into any defect tracking software.
Rational can tie in with defect tracking/requirements/ and reporting
software but its all the rational products like clearcase, clearquest,
requisite pro. Rational is a very nice product for a large process
oriented company. Silk is great if you are a pseudo developer. Winrunner
is great if you want somethign quick and simple to learn and use.
