are there any prerequisites before writing 4 test code

i want to write a 4 test code for comparing 2 strings taken from an application object.

If i want to start from scratch, is it necessary to prepare a testplan?
or by directly writing a script ,compiling and executing it would do.

the problem is i am making the testplan through the wizard, and then inserting code like if else statements and loops in between.but as this is not trapped it gives me compiling errors.

If it is giving compilation error then there must be some error in statements written by you in the code. Just check your constructs once again. Also take care of indentation too.

Creating a test plan is not required.

    Try this:

    Pre-requisites? Yes.
First, start with reading the Manuals or documentation or Online Help.
Then, study the examples provided in SilkTest.

Re: are there any prerequisites before writing 4 test code

Often, the "test plan" and "test frame" formats are completely worthless for your application or the type of testing you do.

    I almost never use them.

If you are starting out with SilkTest, experiment with the "4 Test Script" first.
Everything that you want to do can be done there. And -- is much simpler.

Re: are there any prerequisites before writing 4 test code

It is not necessary to have a test plan to do what you intend to do.
More appropriately start a new testcase just as the one jamesso has posted except that use a "appstate none" after the testcase Comparethis (). Also check that in your Runtime options dialog box the Use Files and Use Path is clean.

Since it appears that you are new to SilkTest playing around with option set is still far away or else you could have different settings and would have been to switch between them by just loading a option set file.

    QAsuvarna,

    1. As mentioned in response to your other posting, discipline yourself to build a good, clean include file. You will be so very thankful for it later.

    2. Follow James' advice and start with a very simple script. Play with it. Massage it. See what you can make it do.

    3. "Live" in the Library Browser under the help menu. It has a wealth of good information. It is one of the best tools of its type I've ever seen. In it you will find all the valid methods you can perform on different objects and data types.

    4. Spend time in this forum. You will learn a ton from the folks in here. My work habit is to look here first thing every morning for any new information. This forum is a gold mine! Do searches on the things you want to know, and if you don't find the information, or if it appears out of date, post your questions just as you have been doing. Most of the folks here are very gracious and patient.

Re: are there any prerequisites before writing 4 test code

A test plan is not necessary but we use it to execute a testcase from our script against different application modules. In our plan we have a line for each module that executes the same testcase. For each module, we pass a variable which is the module name. This determines which module to launch. This way we can run the testcase against all modules in the application or just a single module. I'm sure there are ways to do this within a script but we are having functional testers execute the scripts and it is pretty easy for them to follow the plan.
