    Quick Question : Use of multiple tags

    Hi Gurus,

    A beginners' question. What is the advantage of using multiple tags in identifying an object ?

    Thx.

    can be used for localization purposes.

    If a control has more than one tag maybe based on o/s. That's about all I use them for.

    Re: Quick Question : Use of multiple tags

    Whola!

    Well here is one situation that we encountered, we had a dialogbox with several pagelists, depending on a selection made in the first page the display of controls used to change in the second and third pages. Now several times for a selection made on the first page, a same control (with the same caption but different tags appeared in different locations) The primary problem being that the selection set in the first page alone was something like 20 odd. Not to mention the rest of the pages and possible combinations (5 pages in all) To create separate declarations for all possible combinations would be unimaginable and non-productive.

    What we did was created a class with declaration for all the possible occurances of controls using multitag. An example is posted below. You will however see that more than one control has the same tag at one time or another. This makes it very imperative that the order in which these controls appear are known. In the example shown below see the TextField5 and TextField6, if they were declared as ...
    TextField5 {tag "$782|$718";}
    TextField6 {tag "$$718|$782";}
    then it creates a lot of problems which I may not be able to explain. In our declaration sometimes we had as many as 10 multitags for a single control. So in all the use of mulittags should be done with careful assesment of its refercations depending on the way the tags are going to be resolved.
