Deleting cookies under Temporary Internet Files

    Hi,

I need to know a way to remove cookies stored under Temporary Internet Files. You can see these files by navigating:
Click Tools on the IE5 menubar > Internet Options > Settings > View Files.
    Environment:
    Win 2k
    Silk 5.0.3.2 DOM
    IE 5.0

    Thanks.

They're also in c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. Check out SYS_GetDirContents and SYS_RemoveFile. Although that probably won't get the results you want as the cookie may already be in memory.

Re: Deleting cookies under Temporary Internet Files

We have tried getting the information thru the registry & the path we got was:
    D:\Documents and Settings\userId\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Now, there are folders below this level in addition to some cookies at this level. And these files are not listed when we use SYS_GetDirContents. The result is that the files are not deleted.

    Any clue ?

Yeah, I really didn't think that would work. SYS_GetDirContents will get the same things as if you were to do a Dir in a DOS session. That is, not much in that directory.

I suppose you could do it through Explorer. Tedious and potentially problematic, but it will show you the files.

    Bon chance.

Re: Deleting cookies under Temporary Internet Files

I have a directory in my W2K machine in:
    c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\cookies

Could they cookies you are trying to access be there?

They appear to be related to sites that I have visited in the past with login information. Such as qaforums.com

Re: Deleting cookies under Temporary Internet Files

On my pc with Win2k, the cookies & temporary internet files are being stored on the 'D' drive.
Now, the issue here is about deleting these files (now that we know the location).

I tried using the browser, but the problem here is the usage of co-ordinates in MenuSelect(). Definitely, an alternate method is needed as we would need to deploy this onto other machines.

Lets see if anyone comes up with some solution.

    Thanks.

Re: Deleting cookies under Temporary Internet Files

I am usually only concerned with deleting a specific cookie file and developed the following function:

    [+] DeleteCookie(String sPath, String sFile)
    [ ] //************************************************** ******************************************
[ ] //* This function delete a stored web cookie.
[ ] //* It requires that you know the path and file name of the cookie
[ ] //* INPUT STRING sPath The complete path to the directory where the cookie is stored
    [ ] //* Example "d:\files\"
[ ] //* INPUT STRING sFile A unique portion of the file name. The reason it is only a
[ ] //* portion is that when the cookie is stored windows simply
[ ] //* increments the version of the cookie file, by using a wildcard
[ ] //* to search for, all occurences of the file can be found.
    [ ] //* Example "*State*"
    [ ] //************************************************** ********************************************
[ ] LIST OF FILEINFO lfInfo //Stores the file information from the sPath directory
[ ] LIST OF STRING lsFileName //Stores the file names from the sPath directory
[ ] INTEGER iCount //Counter to increment throught the List of File lfInfo
[ ] STRING sLFile //Individual file name string stored in lsFileName
[ ] Boolean bFound //Boolean used to confirm that the sFile was found in the lsFileName
    [ ]
[ ] lfInfo = SYS_GetDirContents (sPath) //Get the directory contents of the specified directory
    [-] for iCount = 1 to ListCount(lfInfo) //For every FILEINFO in lsInfo
[ ] ListAppend(lsFileName, lfInfo[iCount].sName) //Append the name of the files to the LIST OF STRING lsFileName
    [ ]
[-] for each sLFile in lsFileName //For each file name in lsFileName
[ ] bFound = MatchStr (sFile, sLFile) //See if the sFile string is in the File Names
[-] if bFound == TRUE //If the sFile string is in file name
[ ] SYS_RemoveFile (sPath + sLFile) //Remove the file from the sPath directory
    [ ]

It could be modified to delete all of the files in the directory, or within a loop delete a list of files.

Re: Deleting cookies under Temporary Internet Files

    Thanks Mike for the function.

We did write a similar function & it did a good job of removing most of the cookies. But the issue here is that some cookies under D:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files are not being deleted as SYS_GetDirContents is not retrieving these files.
    Why is this happening?

Re: Deleting cookies under Temporary Internet Files

I've never had that problem. It has always displayed all of the files in the directory I specify.

Re: Deleting cookies under Temporary Internet Files

There are some files and directories (particularly in the profile folders) which windows explorer will show, even though they are located somewhere else. This is just some weird redirection on the part of windows, but if you navigate through a command prompt then you can see what is actually present or not. Silktest's call to the api through SYS_GetDirContents() will also tell you the truth, which is why it seems to be going wrong, when compared with what windows explorer shows you.

And to make it worse, it will vary from os to os (in NT4 for example, the user profiles are stored in "C:\WINNT\Profiles" instead of in "C:\Documents and settings\").
