    Web Testing

I have been testing Windows based applications with Silktest. My company now wants me to start testing Web based applications.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have no idea where to begin...

    Thanks.

    Hi!
There is nothing special or Extra-ordinary testing WEB Application, but following points to be considered (these are very few common but IMP points)

1)Capturing GUI in Inc file, U may face problems
    2)Changing of Window/Object titles Dynamically
3)Synchronisation of Tests Script with Application- Response time and all that
    etc.

    Re: Web Testing

If you used SilkTest for your windows testing then there is not much difference except all control gain the "Html" infront of their names. For example HtmlPushButton.

If you never used SilkTest then start record and play. You'll learn all the control name by no time(couple minutes . Then with experience you'll learn different functions in SIlkTest. The learning curve is around 30 minutes. Maybe a couple hours later you'll know why this forum is so big:P

    Re: Web Testing

If your Windows-based experience is with C++ applications, you're in for a shock.

Web applications are the wild west when it comes to having timing issues; odd-ball nonstandard objects; and a virtually flat, almost non-existent hierarchy. Guidelines and standards that would define some order and consistency are in their infancy.

But hey, once you get past these its just another GUI.

    Re: Web Testing

If you are choosing to learn a test tool for automated regression of a web site which would be the best? The company I worked for was just beginning the process of using WinRunner for windows based apps. Would WinRunner work well for web-based aps also?

    Re: Web Testing

Web app testing is same as windows app just couple of settings do the trick.

Ask yr developers what's the JDK version u r using.
Set the classpatch per the JDK version.
Select the browser U wanna work

Aren't you making an assumption that they are using Java applets? What if their web app is written in VB or something else? The JDK wouldn't matter then...
