    Silktest in Siebel Product

Has anyone used SilkTest to automate any Siebel vertical/product? If so, are there any tips you can give. I am new with Silktest and we just acquired the software and we are planning to use it in Siebel product. So any tricks and tips will be helpful. Thanks a lot in advanced.

I may be totally off base, but I heard somewhere that Silk will not work with that software.

    Good Luck!

    Re: Silktest in Siebel Product

Actually it works quite well with it. As good as the other 3 tools that we evaluated for a Siebel project including one that claimed to be certified by Siebel.

    For Siebel 6.x:
SilkTest is able to work with the various elements in the form entry fields. There is a grid/table control that exposes different types of controls when you tab to a particular row and column. SilkTest works with these controls just fine. It was also easy to tab to the different fields.
There are some toolbars that are graphically drawn that SilkTest didn't work too well with, but Siebel has menus for everything that the toolbars do. (This was actually a suggestion from the tool vendor that Siebel had certified)

    For Siebel 7.x-
Web based application. SilkTest works really well here. It not only finds the text on the screen but it finds the tables as well. SilkTest is also intelligent enough to synchronize itself with the browser, meaning that it will check to see if the browser is ready before proceeding to the next command in a script. With other tools in the comparison, we had to write a LOT of code manually to keep checking if certain items existed on the screen before continuing. In one of our comparisons it took 4 times the amount of code to accomplish SilkTest did. This was much easier to create, read, and maintain.

Something that stands SilkTest apart from all the other tools in this area is it's recovery system. When a failure condition is raised in other tools, you have to write a lot of custom code to handle things smoothly and move onto the next test. SilkTest did most everything that was needed out of the box.

For the rest, we've wrritten many utility functions and methods that can help anyone using SilkTest with Siebel apps.

    Dear ,

I am currently evaluating SilkTest against Siebel 7. I have clearly understood from your message that SilkTest works fine. I am able to understand about that utility functions which you are referring with ? Do you mean to say, that whatever you have written will work across any sieble application ?

Since Siebel7 is web based, SilkTest works very well with it. We have been able to automate our functional test quite easily with it. In addition we wrote some functions that perform backend verification too. This comes in handy when you have customization in Siebel. SilkTest works very well in accessing a database. The most common utilities that we use are functions that compare the Responsibilities and Views and LOV values of one instance against another instance to make sure that proper changes are being made.

DOM was used. Siebel has a few variations of the web front-end though. One uses an activeX control. I have not encountered that one, but I hear that it calls for some workarounds to be used.
