    SilkTest\'s Interactions with a Database

Just wondered if any of you have used SilkTest to interact with a database. Looks like there are some DB methods in the 4Test language reference. Have any of you used them to verify that fields in db tables are properly populated after certain actions occur via the browser, etc....

An example may be, enter First Name on a form
then have SilkTest query the database table and verify that the name field was properly populated.

Encounter any problems that needed workarounds or is it fairly straightforward.

    Thanks
    Steve

There is an example of this in the online help. Has worked pretty well for me. Biggest issue was getting the correct version of the ODBC driver. Try using a standard app like MS Query to figure out if your client can talk to the DB. If that works, SilkTest should work fine.

I had done some work on this quite a while ago. As the previous post says, you should first check your ODBC driver situation. Let's see if I can remember all of this correctly... :-) In Windows, open up the Control Panel and then open up the "ODBC Data Sources". Click on the Drivers tab to see what you've got installed. If you already have, say, an Oracle client installed, you are probably already good to go. It might be necessary to add a data source (in the User DSN tab). Your DBA should be able to help you out with the connections. Then you can use the DB tester functions to connect to the database and do your database stuff.

Re: SilkTest\'s Interactions with a Database

We have used the dbtester command successfully for over a year now. The biggest issues we run into are the ODBC connections not being set up properly. Also be careful that the queries you request handle null response correctly as in the past we have seen some issues where nulls wer returned
