    One of the biggest problems with automation is the 'higher ups' expectations. There is a lot of up front costs to automation. It takes a while to setup and get the infrastucture in place. Once it is setup and you have a solid infrastructure, then you must start automating tests. This always takes longer then testing manually. These tools are generally used for regression testing and not for testing new products or new components to a product. As long as the powers that be buy into this and fully understand it, then automation is very beneficial. There are plenty of white papers that you can read that will go more into depth. I suggest that you read them.

    As far as specific problems with SilkTest, as with any software there are some bugs but I have not run into anything major. I love their product. Their biggest drawback is their Tech Support. It has always been and still is very poor. Hope this helps.
