    Debug mode

    User (jeffreygreen@avaya.com.nospam) posted:

I was wondering if there was a way to turn on print messages
when running a script so of like a trace mode. So, if I wanted
to go to a certain level of tracing some print messages would be
turned on. I was wondering if there was a way to do this.

    Thanks
    Jeff

    Re: Debug mode

The inbuilt debugger doesn't quite do this, so we have implemented something that can; we have a compiler constant called DEBUG, which we set to true or false. We have a corresponding function called DPrint(), which acts exactly like Print() but will only print out if DEBUG has the value true. By scattering DPrint() statements all over our code (e.g. at the start and end of functions, reporting what the values of relevant local variables are), it can make debugging fairly quick and simple.

I'm sure you could extend this idea to give varying degrees of information (e.g. having the DEBUG compiler constant take one of a range of integer values to indicate what detail level of debugging printout you require) if necessary.

Admittedly the debugger can give you all this information (presented in a different way), but when you're debugging a script, having to out of the debugger every time you want to change any of the code and then back in to run the testcase again, is a real pain I find.

try using options/runtime/debugging/print agent calls option. It help me debugging at times!!! You can see all the statements that are executed by silktest!!

    Re: Debug mode

Wouldn't the print message just be in the Debug Transcript window?

If you want trace-level printing of messages, then check out my logClass that I have posted here (both to the forums and download sections). That allows for multiple trace levels and outputs both to the Silk result file and a log file.

    Dave,

What do you mean by this?

Sorry, I'm just not getting it.

Oh, wait. Never mind. I see what you mean now. My bad.

    Re: Debug mode

    Just my 2 cents:

Click on a type list variable in your local/global viewer window and it will be displayed vertically instead of horizontally.
There is a diplay limit on the horizontal line so diplaying vertically may improve information presentation.

I am not sure if will work also on other structured types like class or record.
