Reading xls file without creating DSN

    User Pratibha (pratibha@prabodhan.com.nospam) posted:

    Hello Friends,
I am trying to read an xls file without creating DSN. But when I used FileReadValue() function it gave me an error saying "Error: Variable ࡱ is not defined ". When I tried FileReadLine function, it read some ASCII characters. Is there anybody who read xls file before without creating DSN. Please help me.

    Regards,
    Pratibha

    Hello Friends,

I am trying to invoke sample Java application. I have done the following steps:

    1. We have installed JDK 1.2.2

2 We have added the Java support path to CLASSPATH.

3 We have set up the environment variable, JDKHOME.

4 We have tried running the application from Windows Start menu by selecting:
    Start/Programs/<SilkTest program folder>/Sample Applications/Java AWT TestApp.

But it is not opening the application.

We have also checked with the status.html. It is working fine.

Can someone tell me what is the problem and solution for the same?
    Regards,
    Pratibha

Re: Reading xls file without creating DSN

You should split up your questions into different posts but here are some things that should help.

    1. Regarding your first question concerning reading xls files the method you described will not work. Excel has a special file format that will not work with the function FileReadValue(). This function works best with a file that was created with FileWriteValue(). If you still want to read data values from Excel you can either save the Excel file as Tab Separated file or a csv. Then have SilkTest parse out the information you need. Another alternative is to create a vbs file that can access Excel objects. Have Silk Test call this vbs etc...

    2. For your second problem try this:
    a.) Launch a dos prompt.
b.) CD your way to the silkTest installation directory.
    c.)CD to the directory JavaEx.
d.)You should now be at a directory similar to this: C:\Program Files\Segue\SilkTest\JavaEx>
e.) at the prompt type the following:
    java -classpath TestApp.jar TestApp

This should work. I also had the same problem with the batch file they provided so I just ran this command manually.

Note: The directory in where java.exe lives must be in your %path% environment variable. If it is not you will get something like program not recognized etc...
