Using Excel In My Test Cases

Here is a problem that has me very confused.

I am testing a windows application. I have created test cases that use MS Excel, by taking data from Excel and putting it into my windows application. I have noticed the following.

If I have the Excel file opened when running my test case, then my test case passes. If I have the Excel file closed when running my test case, then my test case fails.

In my Excel file it contains peoples ages that I use to varify that they are correct. So I check that the age on my application matches the age in the Excel file.

    For Example:
The format is "25 yrs 3 mths".

If I have the Excel file opened when running the test case it will match. If I don't have the Excel file opened when running the test case it fails even though they match.

The test case runs fine, but when I check my *.res file, it displays that there where no matches on any rows.

My other test cases work fine when the Excel fine is closed, but not this one.

    Can anyone help...

How exactly are you doing the verification? Are you reading the data in from Excel (e.g. through an odbc connection) at the start of the testcase, and then confirming that your app is displaying it correctly when entered?
Or is there some interaction with excel further into the testcase?

So apart from the bit at the beginning where your testcase reads some data out of a spreadsheet through the odbc connection, excel is completely irrelevant to the rest of the testcase?
Can you show us the relevant part of your script, and the results file?
