Re: Totally New and Totally Lost

Here is the order we use to start SilkTest scripting:

    1. Know your application & testcases
    2. Record window declarations (Record/Window Declarations). Store these in your .inc file. You can also File/New/Frame file and create a frame file.
    3. Record the basestates (where you want to start your testcase) you will need to run your testcases. (Go to Record/Application State) Give each one a unique name that ties to the screen you want to set up. Store these in you .inc file.
    4. Create your testcases.
    5. Run your testcases
    6. Check your testcases

I have included an example (based on QA Forum) to give you both the .t and .inc file.

What have you done so far and what training have you had?

Re: Totally New and Totally Lost

I went to the 2 day foundation training and the 2 day 4 test language. both were a complete waste of money. We used that sample GMO web sight that is so basic and makes the tool look flawless. We were told by the Consultant to not even record declarations because we have way too many and they change too often that it would be a constant headache. So we thought we would try getting some type of generic testcases created, but that was too frustrted to start with, there is just too much, so we decided before he left to just getting simple recordings of a beginning to end transaction of our websight, one of the sights, I can't get it, I'm running into snags everywhere. Do me a favor, can you take a look at our web sight? There are so many differnt paths, I guess I just want someones point of view on it, we have two seperate sights, carfax.com and carfaxonlin.com/ not to mention we have a/b versions and partner sights and we have 2 installs a day with any where from 1 to 100 changes. whats your opnion?

What do you want to test on this sight?

I was able to record the first screen and a testcase to drive from the first to the second screen.

I also recorded the AppState to get to the first screen. All of this took about 10 minutes.

    Totally New and Totally Lost

I Can't even get my options sets saved and dont even know how to begin. My Consultant came and went adn did this in our lab downstairs so basically I saw nothing. I know this is how I set up my options to be saved and used over and over for difernt testcases but how do I even get my default base state set? Is it in the runtime options, I can save it, I just don't know what I'm saving.

Re: Totally New and Totally Lost

I want to test a VIN, so I would type a VIN in the Enter a vin box, then a valid zip code (any us zip code) and click go (you can use this vin 1FDEE1460VHA50011. then it would take you to start my order page, I would continue click the start my order button, and it takes me to Order Carfax Reports, I would continue. O.k. this is where you would stop because we use a real credit card to fill out all this info unles we use our alpha test box which we have a fake credit card but thats a whole differnt story. so just stop at that page. thanks...

It sounds like the might need some minor adjustments, but more importantly, it sounds like someone needs to document what the code is supposed to be doing and explain to you how to fix it if something changes or stops working. Don't give up! Either get the consultant to document these things for you and train you on what it all means, or find a consultant who has experience doing just that.
