Regarding options File and options set

    User kavita (kavita@prabodhan.com.nospam) posted:

I would like to know about the basic functionality of options file and options set.

Can anybody help me out by telling -

    1. What basically these are used for ?

    2. What are the steps need to be followed for getting this done ?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Hi,

The options file allows you to set all the environmental variables prior to running your tests. These variables include agent options, runtime options, class mappings etc. Options files are very handy when you need to distribute your tests to other users.

Re: Regarding options File and options set

Another way of looking at option files is to look at the partner.ini file. This file contains all of the options (Agent, Runtime, Extensions, ect.) that get loaded when you start up SilkTest. An .OPT file is an .INI file that contains items from the partner.ini file that you want to have changed when you open that option set.

Why? -- Suppose you have 2 projects that you work on. Each have different extensions being used and frame files used. Instead of manually typing the frame file into the Use Files part of the Runtime Option dialog each time you want to switch to testing another app, you could have all the options you need stored in an .OPT file. From the Options menu you could just open the .OPT file for the other application and all the needed configuration of SilkTest will be done for you. This is especially vital when you want to take tests from on machine to another. An .OPT file can ensure the SilkTest on one machine is configured the same as one on another machine.

If you're talking to Segue Tech Support, you might mention that the "Data File for Attributes and Queries" is not included in a .opt file, but should be. This would be VERY helpful when switching between applications.

In my understanding, opt file is similiar to the dsp in Visual Studio.
