    Silk hanging when recording

    Hi all,
I just started to use Silk on Windows 2000 to test windows application (Notepad is the target I am playing around now), I declared test frame sucessfully, then I found Silk hangs every time when I try to record test case. Any help will be appericated!

    Hi Sam,

SilkTest 5+ should be OK with Windows 2000 especially if you are using the Notepad application. If you have just installed SilkTest, there may be a conflict between the enabled extensions. Since you are just testing with Notepad, I'd recommend that you disable all the extensions in both the Extension Enabler and SilkTest Options / Extension.

    Sam,

We have had the same problem when recording actions on Windows 2000. In most cases, you will need to reboot in order to clear the problem. Otherwise, once it happens in a particular session, it will occur every time you record. We use no extensions and still have the problem. Our work around is to record as little as possible.

Thanks Matt. Do you think they (Silk) have a update/fix? I couldn't find this info from Segue's website. BTW, what version you are using?

    Re: Silk hanging when recording

I have encountered the same problem as Sam.

I am running SilkTest 5.0.3 with IE 5.0 / Win 2K on my
machine. However, it becomes extreamly slow (more than
20 mins when I try to record or run a testcase.)

    Does anyone have idea?

P.S. I am test web applicatoins.

    Re: Silk hanging when recording

SeanF is right about how it slows down everything on the PC. It sometimes takes 10 minutes to just get all the applications closed so the that OS can be restarted. We reported the problem to Segue a long time ago (more than a year), and have not heard anything back on it. We had a new person trying to go through the SilkTest tutorial on Windows 2000, and he kept having the problem. We are using 5.0.3. Like many other problems with SilkTest, we have learned to workaround it and use the record feature minimally.

    Re: Silk hanging when recording

If you are trying to record on Win2K or WinNT and have over 64MB of ram installed on your system (I'm sure you all do) than go into REGEDIT and try changing the value for
and change to Data Value to 1. Try this and please let me know if it helps. I got this from someone on the board a couple of years ago and it helped drmatically for my web testing. However I am in a new environment doing Client/Server with about 1/5 million line of include files in my use files and it does not seem to help as much here. What I have found does help is to do the recording from a scrap file that does not have all of the function and recovery system files referenced.

BTW I have also noted that Silk 5.01+ does not run well on any PII Notebook I had but it ran fine on a PIII speed step 600. I am currently running on a PIII 933 with 1/2 Gig of RAM and I still have a problem like I stated above.

    Good Luck,
    Tom

    Re: Silk hanging when recording

One other idea -- don't try to record actions or record testcase if you have any HtmlPopupLists. That could easily crash you on any OS, even if you're using SilkTest 5.5, Hotfix 3.
