Which ODBC driver is better ?

I just noticed that I can use either EITHER the Microsoft or the Oracle ODBC driver to connect to our Oracle 8i SQL Server.

Do any of you have some insight into which one is more stable with Silk 5.0.3.2 on Windows NT ?

I noticed that neither one seems to support "DESCRIBE table" queries.

Where can I find what commands are supported by each of these drivers ?

Re: Which ODBC driver is better ?

When working with Oracle, I always use the Oracle ODBC Driver and it seems to work well for me, thus far.
When I was working with SQL Server, then I used the Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver.
Just like the Printer Drivers --- it is much better to use the driver provided by or that comes with the printer than relying on the universal/generic driver provided by Microsoft with the OS.

Re: Which ODBC driver is better ?

Experimenting, I found that with the Microsoft driver, I have no problem with the Query:

SELECT USER_NAME, ACR, ROLE FROM SBT_USER WHERE ROLE != 'M'

With the Oracle driver, I get the error:
*** Error: (07006) [Oracle][ODBC]Restricted data type attribute violation.

    My versions are:

    Microsoft ODBC for Oracle;2.573.4202.00;Microsoft Corporation;MSORCL32.DLL;06/04/99

    Oracle ODBC Driver;8.01.06.00;Oracle Corporation;SQORA32.DLL;01/04/00

The Microsoft driver also seems to be faster.

    Comments ?

Don't know if it's going to make any difference, but Oracle ODBC Driver I use is dated 01/27/2000.
There's probably even a newer version than this.

Re: Which ODBC driver is better ?

While I'd rather use the driver provided by the DB creator, in my experience it was a lot faster when working with Oracle to use ANYTHING but the Oracle ODBC driver. Microsoft, Intersolv.... On average the Oracle driver took 8 seconds to just run a connect where the others were nearly instantaneous.

    Just my $0.03.
