Help needed on .pln file with lots of data

I'm having a problem in which a plan file I'm running fails consistently with the error "Testcase VerifySMLMembers not executed due to compile errors". If I try running the testcase by hand I *sometimes* get the error "Arguments to testcase VerifySMLMembers are not valid". And then sometimes the testcase runs just fine. The portion of the plan file looks like this:

    Verify Members in SML
    testcase: VerifySMLMembers ($Desc, $Members)
    $Desc = "Verifying SML members"
    $Members = {$m1, $m2, $m3, $m4, $m5, $m6, $m7, $m8, $m9, $m10, $m11, $m12, $m13, $m14}
$m1 = "Admin Eight", "Admin Nine", "Admin Seven", "Admin Six", "Admin Ten", "Alan Jardine"
$m2 = "All", "Allan Clarke", "Ann Silver", "Bernie Calvert", "Bill Wyman", "Billy Bragg"
$m3 = "Bob Dylan", "Bobby Elliot", "Brian Wilson", "Bruce Johnston", "Bryan Ferry"
$m4 = "CanCreate Eight", "CanCreate Four", "CanCreate Six", "CanCreate Ten", "CanCreate Two"
$m5 = "CanModify Five", "CanModify Nine", "CanModify One", "CanModify Seven", "CanModify Three"
$m6 = "Charlie Watts", "Christine Clay", "Cream", "Dan Mullins", "Deactivated Five"
$m7 = "Deactivated Four", "Deactivated One", "Deactivated Three", "Deactivated Two", "Doug Yule"
$m8 = "Elvis Costello", "Eric Haydock", "Eric Patrick Clapp", "Foo", "Ginger Baker", "Graham Nash"
$m9 = "Greg Donaldson", "Jack Bruce", "Jeff Beck", "Jimmy Page", "John Cale", "John Entwistle"
$m10 = "John Paul Jones", "Keith Richards", "Led Zeppelin", "Lou Reed", "Mark Knopfler"
$m11 = "Maureen Tucker", "Mick Jagger", "Mike Love", "Old Gits", "Pete Townshend", "Peter Frampton"
$m12 = "Richard Thompson", "Robert Plant", "Roger Daltrey", "Ron Wood", "Roxy Music"
$m13 = "Steve Marriott", "Terry Sylvester", "The Beach Boys", "The Hollies", "The Rolling Stones"
$m14 = "The Velvet Underground", "The Who", "Tom Waits", "Tony Hicks", "user 1", "Willie Alexander"

And the call in the .t file looks like this:

testcase VerifySMLMembers (STRING sDesc, LIST OF STRING lsMembers) appstate none

Obviously, I'm passing in a great deal of data here. I have a vague recollection of a problem in Organizer in which large amounts of data can cause it to behave unexpectedly. I don't remember more than that, and I don't happen to remember at this moment if there was any sort of workaround to this problem.

    Any ideas?

Re: Help needed on .pln file with lots of data

There is a limit as to how much data you can pass down from the plan level, when you exceed it you get the errors you describe. I don't know if anyone has figured out the # of characters it takes to "break" the plan.

When I run into this problem I take the data and put it in a CSV file, and read it in from there. I'd modify the testcase to take a CSV file path as an argument, that way you can still create other tests and data drive them.

Sorry for asking a stupid question, but what is a .csv file? I couldn't find it in the help.

    thanks.

ASCII file of Comma Separated Values

    FirstName,LastName
    David,Reed
    John,Smith
    Guido,Schadenfreude

You can easily create these in Excel. It's one of the save options (file type) and will separate each row into a line, each cell separated by a comma.

It's a fairly generic distinction. You could also do a tab separated file.

Re: Help needed on .pln file with lots of data

Another option here, since I'm passing in a pretty simple list, is to create a text file with each item on a separate line, i.e.:

and to use the ListRead function, which will open the file and read the data into a list. No fuss, no muss! Works great.
