Need to get text out of a wierd customwin list

Any help with the following would be great.

I have a customwin class which is in a list format. The items in the list are dynamic, different items can be present at any time. The structure of each item in the list is as follows: A brief description of the item (ie Name and then a field where a value can be placed (ie a text field). What i would like to know is how can i extract that brief description, or all the discriptions, so that i can select that particular item and edit the field. I tried GetEverything() and nothing was returned. Thanks.

Try FindItem () followed by GetItemText () or something similar.
Check the Online Help for topics on list items.
If your AUT is written in PowerBuilder, you can also consult the Online Help.

The only problem is that i can't get SilkTest to act like it's a listbox, how hard is it to typecast the customwin list to a listbox with custom list elements(probably another class for these?)

Can you copy the contents of the list to the Clipboard?

If so, you can use TypeKeys to highlight the list and copy the values.

No, i can't copy and paste any of the contents in the list. I'm thinking that i've found a limitation to silktest.

Try to do what you want to do manually using the mouse and keyboard. Then try to repeat this via the Record/Actions in SilkTest. First, try the selection using the mouse then try it again using the keyboard interface (arrow keys, Enter key, etc.). And keep checking what's getting recorded. This should at least give you an idea on what's being recognise by SilkTest.

By copy and paste, I mean select the contents of the list using the keyboard or mouse, then try the various key combinations to copy the text to the clipboard. (Ctrl-Ins, Ctrl-C)

If you can get the values in this fashion, then you can write a function to get the list contents using TypeKeys.

lol, this list sucks, silktest doesn't record jack about it at all, so i had to write a function which would find the values and their indexes in the list by using another list i found.

When you say SilkTest doesn't record jack, do you mean Silk can't even see the list exists?

Re: Need to get text out of a wierd customwin list

That's what happens when a developer tries to be too cute or be unique on his/her coding technique (Microsoft does it this way soooo I'll do it My Way ( : even without Frank Sinatra). He/she will did a very good job of making a simple listbox into something that most test tools see abnormal.
Maybe you can ask your programmer to automate the tests for this area alone (:
You should see some of the stuffs they do in Delphi apps where some developers do customize objects that are "already custom objects" in the first place.
Why do they do it? The common reply is "I hate Bill Gates."... They believe they are better programmers than Bill but, they are nowhere close to where Bill is financially.
