SilkTest question on testing browser page with Netscape vs IE

    User QA Engineer (qaengus@yahoo.com) posted:

    Hi,

I guess U can give it a shot by using VO extension and
    then recording Ur Windows declarations.

For further info on VO and DOM extension check out the
    manual. Its quite well explained.

    Hope this helps..

    good luck!

Re: SilkTest question on testing browser page with Netscape vs IE

Thanks for responded to my email I did used VO extension while recording the browser (Netscape) declarations. The problem is the script only runs under Netscape. My be I need to record the IE browser declaration as well? If that's the case, then it'll be a lot of work. I am just wondering how people deal with this?

    Thanks again,
    Xingchao

Re: SilkTest question on testing browser page with Netscape vs IE

You might be in luck. In my case I coded for IE and it works for NS too. In some cases you have to change the code for specific control or situation.

Ex: you can't navigate NS with tabs very well, NS doesn't set tab focus.

Some popup menu in NS can't use array keys.

Most of the stuff should work. Use GetBrowserType() to know which browser is in use. You can also use the browser key words
to indicate when a code must be in used.

    check the help for more.

Re: SilkTest question on testing browser page with Netscape vs IE

    Thanks for sharing your experience!
I am still struggling with the code - they now partly worked. The biggest problem is the IE browser can't get the focus back after some other pop-up dialog box quit. The log gives "Application not ready" sort of error message regardless any SetActive or SetFocus statements were put to there...

    Thanks again,

Re: SilkTest question on testing browser page with Netscape vs IE

The trick around that is always keep the caption of your main program. This way you can get the focus of your program or browser back. It's true that if you don't have the focus on something the BrowserPage.SetActive() should not work(I hope this is correct .

If GetCaption() doesn't work you have to resort to use user32.dll(search this forum for 'GetForegroundWindow()' for an example, that grabs the caption of browser/window.

Re: SilkTest question on testing browser page with Netscape vs IE

RE: recording decs for cross-browser testing:
I am using SilkTest 5.0.3.2 on Win95 platform and found that recording with Netscape first worked better. Once I made sure it was working, I ran the testcase on IE and only investigated the objects that were failing. Then I checked the declarations usng IE and added multiple tags only for the declarations that were different. So it really wasn't too much extra work. (but then my app wasn't too large either)

    RE: getting focus -
In cases where I was bringing up another panel: I had to add a loop to sleep if the window did not exist or was not active. I also used a value which, when exceeded, would break the loop if it took too long. It may be worth a try even though you said that you can't get focus after dismissing a dialog box.
