How to get the window ID, so that caption can be avoided.

    Hi All,
I want to avoid caption of window as recognition criteria, instead I want window Id to use. How should I do this. Or any other method to avoid caption and use some other thing so that I need not hard code any thing like caption.

    Mahesh.

    This is not much difficult.
Start Silk Test, open your application plan and then Click Record->Window Declarations. After recording Click Alt+Ctrl.Click options button and see under heading"Window Identifiers" check the radio button "Window ID" and resume tracking.
You can also set this before recording.
    Is it easy?

You can get the caption of almost of any dialogbox/windows/messagebox under windows dynamically.

    Steps:
1)Know which window has the focus
2)Get the caption of that window

Note:for browser usually the caption is just the text between title /title keywords(in the source file).

    Code for browser and non-browser

You can also use your current window declarations, just bring up the window you want to change the tag of and Record/Window Tags, this will show you all of the tag that you can use with the object.

Record/Window Tags is not a default recorder, to turn it on:
Options/Agent/Compatibility, then chack the box next to Add 'Window tags' to the Record menu.

This is great tool to use so that you do not have to record window declarations and to troubleshoot problems caused by incorrect or changing tags.
