    Get Text on area...

    Another WinRunner transplant question...

    WinRunner has a feature of being able to read text in an area rather than just on an object. Is there an equatable operation in Silk?

    I want to use it to access some icons that can't be seen by Silk. Right now I have to resort to hard-coded positions.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Re: Get Text on area...

    Hi;

    Unfortunately, a GetText method only exists for the TextField, StaticText, ComboBox, HtmlText (etc.) classes, not AnyWin or CustomWin. Unlike WinRunner, SilkTest does not have the ability to read text from arbitrary areas of the screen.

    There was some OCR work done in the past, but it never made it into the product. I hear that character recognition will be coming in some future release.

    Score one for WinRunner.

    Have Fun....

    I ran into a similar problem, but I am not sure if this solution would be suitable in your case. I clicked this custom object to set it active then used the application under test to give me its properties, included in its properties was the name of this object that I was looking for.

    Re: Get Text on area...

    David Shtern, a very proficient Silk user, developed an OCR capability (via a DLL) for use with SilkTest.

    There was an article about it in segue@work back in August of '99. David's contact information is in the article (email is dshtern@bignet.net). Here is a link to the article (if you can't access the newsletter, please let me know and I will email you the article): http://customers.segue.com/protected...shtern_ocr.htm

    Hope this helps!

    I understand that this capability "may" be included in Silk 6.0.

    Re: Get Text on area...

    Heidi's reference to Shtern's work and the Segue newsletter was what I was referrring to when I said "some OCR work had been done in the past".

    I had downloaded David's dll, and found that it (or it's install) was password protected. When I emailed David for the key, he replied that he couldn't give me the key because the work was never completed as he couldn't get the OCR to work consistently.
