Amount of UNIX agents for one machine

Can anyone tell me if there is a limit to the amount of agents that I can start on a UNIX Sun Solaris machine? If it can be done, how? If it can't be done, does anyone know if its a licensing issue or if it is technically impossible. I want to run at least two agents simultaneously (maybe more).

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Amount of UNIX agents for one machine

On another Unix environment (Linx), I've been able to start 3-4 multiple agents. Each agent gets a different port number. You have to connect to the agent using agentnameortnumber.

    Example:
    Connect ("remotemachine:7462")
    Connect ("remotemachine:7599")

    Hope this helps.

Re: Amount of UNIX agents for one machine

    John,

    I'm confused here...

I was under the impression there was no Agent for Solaris. Isn't this where the silkbean comes into play? And with the bean, you have to address it one machine at a time, so I'm curious about the discussion here. Can you elaborate a bit on this?

    Thanks.

Re: Amount of UNIX agents for one machine

    Here's the answer from Segue

    1) NUMBER OF AGENTS

On UNIX the number of Agents is limited by the license file, check the file
license.dat for the feature line for sol2agent the number of simultaneous
licenses available for the Agents will be given after the expiry date for
    the feature.

For example the line in the file /opt/partner/FLEXlm/license.dat :-

    FEATURE sol2agent qapd 4.000 01-jan-2010 2 2B583061B68E517DC8C5 "Segue
    Software, Inc."

Limits the user to 2 Agents.

    2) USING MULTIPLE AGENTS

    a) To do this, start the each Agent using a possible alternative port number
as an argument to the port number switch(-p). The syntax is:

    agent -p nnnn &

The value of nnnn must be in the range 1000 to 9999, and & starts the agent
    in background.

NB: When you start an Agent that does not use the default port number, you
must always specify the number you want used; otherwise UNIX selects a
    number for you.

    b) When you have an Agent that uses other than the default port number, you
have to specify the port number in every reference to that Agent. The syntax
    is:

    "AgentName:nnnn"

where AgentName is the target machine name and nnnn is the port number.

    Hope this helps.
