    Testing Java application on Solaris

    Hi,

I'm still in the process of evaluating SilkTest. I would be testing
java stand-alone application on both Windows2000 and Solaris.

I would like some feedback from people who wrote script portable to
    both platforms:

1- I was able to use the silkbean agent to drive my test script on
Solaris. Although, I observed that some actions "recorded" in my
original script (on windows), like dragging the
    mouse "MyWindow.DragMouse (1, 77, 89, 222, 92)" on a scrolling scale
widget, would not be recognize well on Solaris. I used
    the "MyWindow.JavaxSwingJTabbedPane.ScrollingScale.Set Position()"
method instead and it worked fine.

What practices should I avoid or use in order for my scripts to run
smoothly on both platform??? Does a lot of changes are required?
How would you qualify the effort?

2- I also noticed that the execution of tests was much slower on
Solaris then on Windows (local and remote). Here are the numbers
I've got running a simple test (create new client, select client in
the list and delete it), over and over again:

Locally on Windows, test executed 313 times in 40 min.
On a Remote Windows PC, test executed 311 times in 2h30.
On the Remote Solaris, test executed 247 times in 13h50.

Does these numbers make sense to you? Is there something I need to
set on the Solaris side to improve the speed of execution of the
    actions?

N.B. The application is using JDK 1.2.2, any concerns??

    Thanks

Dragging the mouse on the scoll bar is not usually a good practise. U might wanna click on the scroll bar once at a time during your recording session, see if that works. I had the same problem before on linux but i got that using this method

    thx

I'm also testing a Java Stand Alone App.

My Windows script takes 10 minutes to run locally and about 20 minutes remotely on Solaris .

I guess it has to do with speed of network connection. Even so, if your script is running %600 slower on Unix. SOmething must be wrong !

My tests are slower on Linux/Sun machines too, but not anywhere near that bad. Are the Host and Target machines on the same hub/switch? If the TCP/IP connection is slow, that might impact the speed of the tests.

Re: Testing Java application on Solaris

    Mel,

Don't fall into the trap of believing that the silkbean does everything the Agent does, or that the silkbean does things in the same way. It does NOT! I have had a myriad of problems testing with the bean. It is very poorly documented, and not exactly "robust." Nonetheless, in my tool evaluation about 18 - 20 months ago, there was no one else who could do this sort of testing at all!

For certain, I would avoid any sort of mouse drag or scrollbar manipulation. Get all your objects named/tagged and manipulate them programatically.

    Good luck!
