SilkTest 5.0.3.1 problems with playback & selecting items in HtmlPopupList

    Hello,

I am new to this forum so forgive me if I'm not clear on this problem & terminology ...hopefully I will be.

    My setup:
I'm using SilkTest 5.0.3.1 on Win NT 4.0 Server (SP6) and IE 5.0 (using the IE DOM method in SilkTest).

    My test:
I have used SilkTest's recorder to record my selection of a field in what Silk sees as an HtmlPopupList on an internal website. The List itself is a select type of form, of length 1 containing several items (such that you see the first item on the list, and when you click on it the entire list drops down and you see it all). This list is sitting inside of frames in the HTML, and is called up by .asp's.

So I use SilkTest to record my selection of this list, and it sees it ok and shows it as something like:
    MenuBar.CasesButton.Click (1, 27, 2)
    EServiceCases.View.CasesTypeList.Select ("All Active Cases")

Where "All Active Cases" is the selection in the list.

My include file shows this "CasesTypeList" as:
    [-] HtmlPopupList CasesTypeList
[-] multitag "My Work ListAll Active CasesClosed CasesPending Closure - CommercePending Closure - OtherPending NotificationStep: Pending Cus*"
    [ ] "#1"

    (hope that came through ok).

    The problem:
As I said, the recorder picks it all up ok, but on playback, SilkTest can't seem to make the selection in that list, and fails, with the error:
Error: Item 'All Active Cases' was not found
    Occurred in Select

And it points to that exact line of the test script which is the action of selecting from that list.

    *whew!* (lenghty post...)

Does anyone know if this is a known problem, and/or if there are any solutions or workarounds?

I would appreciate anyone's insight on this.

    Thanks!
    Eric

Re: SilkTest 5.0.3.1 problems with playback & selecting items in HtmlPopupList

Here are a few tips when interacting with PopupLists...

1st... Make sure you browser is maximized (reason if the popup is at the lower edge of the browser Silk gets confused as to if it's supposed to pull up or down)
If it still apears at the edge after a maximize, then do a PopupList.ScollIntoView() or just scroll down.

2nd... In the multitag use part of the caption that will always be there... and use a wild card if it's that long. Example:
"My Work*" <-- adding the * you don't need to have the whole thing in.

3rd... Redeclare that Popup and add the Window ID to the multitag...

4th... You can try to put the "#1" before the caption tag "My Work... etc."

    Hope that helps...

Re: SilkTest 5.0.3.1 problems with playback & selecting items in HtmlPopupList

Thanks for the tips AJ, but unfortunately they didn't seem to solve my problem.

    1) My browser was already maximized (and the popup in on the left, towards the top, but not on the edge so no pull up/down issues there).

    2) I abbreviated my caption in the multitag (good idea!)

    3) I changed the declaration of that popup in the include file, along with the abbreviated caption and with the Window ID added as well

    4) I even moved the #1 before the caption tag.

Still, no success. I will keep trying things though...

Re: SilkTest 5.0.3.1 problems with playback & selecting items in HtmlPopupList

    Hi there,

Are you still having issues with it. If yes, do one thing. Before playing your script back, Select Window Declaration under Record menu in Silk Test and select the HtmlPopUpList on your page. If the declaration shows that controls as HtmlPopUpList then you are not having any recognizing issues.

I did not undertsand how Silk Test can not play back if it recoignizes the control. Please send the code you are playing back.

Re: SilkTest 5.0.3.1 problems with playback & selecting items in HtmlPopupList

    Hello sree,

The window declaration for SilkTest of this popup while recording the initial *.inc file recognized this list just fine. So your suggestion of checking to see if the control shows up as an HtmlPopUpList resulted in a successfull recognition - hence my frustration over this issue. Silk sees it all just fine while recording (recording the declarations as well as the test!), but can't play it back! Hmm....

Anyhow, here is a piece of my include file (just pay attention to the HtmlPopUpList here...that's the problem one):
    [-] BrowserChild View
    [ ] tag "View"
    [+] HtmlText LeftTitleBar
[ ] tag "My Work ListAll Active CasesClosed CasesPending Closure - CommercePending Closure - OtherPending NotificationStep: Pending Cus*[1]"
    [-] HtmlPopupList CasesTypeList
    [-] multitag "#1"
    [ ] "My Work*"
    [ ] "$ViewList"
    [+] HtmlPushButton Find
    [+] multitag "Find"
    [ ] "#1"
    [+] HtmlPushButton Views
    [+] multitag "Views"
    [ ] "#2"
    [+] HtmlText RightTitleBar
[ ] tag "My Work ListAll Active CasesClosed CasesPending Closure - CommercePending Closure - OtherPending NotificationStep: Pending Cus*[2]"
    [+] HtmlPushButton New
    [+] multitag "New"
    [ ] "#3"
    [+] HtmlPushButton HideList
    [+] multitag "Hide List"
    [ ] "#4"

And here's the piece of the recorded test script itself:
    [-] testcase Summary_ChangeCases ()
    [-] recording
    [ ] Silknet.SetActive ()
    [ ] Silknet.MenuBar.CasesButton.Click (1, 27, 2)
    [ ] Sleep(2)
[ ] //The next line is where the problem occurs when trying to run this testcase
    [ ] CasesPage.EServiceCases.View.CasesTypeList.Select ("*All Active Cases*")
    [ ] Silknet.SetActive ()

    ------------------

Please note that I'm using a product called "SilkNet", which is *not* to be confused with "SilkTest" (seperate companies, seperate products! SilkNet is a web app that uses the former company name, and SilkTest is of course our testing tool). Believe me, it's the source of some confusion at work here..

    Thanks,
    Eric

This is a bug which has been fixed in the 5.5 Beta. It may also be fixed in 5.03.2.

Re: SilkTest 5.0.3.1 problems with playback & selecting items in HtmlPopupList

As far as I know, the update will be available on December 20th from the Segue web site. It will apparently fix a number of known problems as well as provide support for IE 5.5.

    Hope this helps
