I am pretty new to this tool I just wanted to know whether we can do load testing on three tier architecture? If yes can we find the load on the middle ware and the backend database? First I wanted to know whether I can load test a three tier architecture using silk performer???
You generate the load directly to the web layer. So, if you're interested in trying to test the back end layer, you've got to ensure that the first 2 layers will handle what you're throwing at it.
Generally, you can't use Silk Performer to monitor other layers besides the web interface. But, you can use some data to help give you some ideas. Also, the SAM might be able to monitor Perfmon type stuff on the middle layers.
You can test each part of your 3 tiers separately, as the guys said, SilkPerformer handles many different protocols, so you could for example set up a loadtest on your database alone.
If you run a test against your webserver you can monitor using SAM (Server Analysis Module) at various points to see how the other tiers in your system are performing, and seeing which one causes a bottle neck. You may need to buy additional licenses though to monitor things like oracle measures etc..
