You know, without specific examples of suckage (where, what, why, etc) one is inclined to think your posting is nothing more than trolling.

    Re: Test Manager Sucks

To be completely honest with you, I'd take TestManager over TestDirector any day of the week.

I will admit that I have only used TestDirector with Performance scripts though, so I can't comment on how it might compare for functional scripts.

    Re: Test Manager Sucks

Trolling? you've obviously never used the product, here is a hype vs reality analysis

Hype- Central source of all testing information

Reality- Central repository of SOME test information if you have the time to enter it
Hype- Flags test cases potentially impacted by change during development
Reality- There is rarely a situation where changing a piece of code impacts only its originating requirement and hence its associated test

    Hype- Enables distributed functional testing

Reality- Testing should primarily be functional so take that for granted. We have had nothing but problems trying to enable management of distributed automated testing with this tool, it is platform sensitive, differing target platforms are usually the driving justification for distributed testing, the secondary driving justification behind distributed testing is a distributed system, unfortunately there is no means to synchronise tests to interact across a distributed environment, distributed testing requires synchronisation first and foremost

Hype- Includes manual test results in reports

Reality- Reports cannot display test steps, come up blank, or crash the entire application

Hype- Handles virtually any type of test script

Reality- If you have the time and resources to implement a test script execution adapter using their arcane API

Hype- Can associate test cases with project milestones

Reality- Great tests have attributes, well done rational, oh sorry I forgot, you didn't write TestManager, did you?

Hype- Has APIs that support the development of adapters

Reality- Has one API which is arcane and therefore does NOT support development of anything

Hype- Accepts test-plan input from a wide array of sources

Reality- so long as a human is standing between the source and TM and inputting theses sources Manually

Please don't reply to this unless you have something useful to say

    Re: Test Manager Sucks

    2 simple things.

    1) I can create realistic user community models for performance testing and increase their volume easilly with no rework. With a complex user community model this takes hours in Test Director.

    2) I can get the raw data out of TestManager so I can create useful reports.

For 90% of what I do, I'll take those two pieces of functionality over all others.

Hi Scott, I agree with the first part [my inital reply was not aimed at you], but am still having nightmares trying to extract raw data, either with the built in [access] reporting tool, or the crystal reports which come bundled with the rational solution, maybe its user error, i don't know...either way my hand has now been forced thanks to IBM's STUPID idea to kill visual test..Mercury here i come

    Re: Test Manager Sucks

I haven't been using TestManager for long, but the first shortcoming that I found was the inability to do a FIND within test cases. There is the ability to search for text in test case names (and it's case-sensitive), but not within test cases.

    Re: Test Manager Sucks

Gotta agree with the TeleFagman. I'm using Test manager rite now n it sucks beyond compare. I think it looks real pretty on paper with all its added features but fades in comparison to TD when you compare practical usefulness.

TD, I think is easier to use, understand and work around with. I donno maybe its just me... I have used TD more often than Test Manager.
