Using Robot or TestManager to run a project?
I am new to QA/testing and have never used Rational Robot for a full scale testing project.
However, I've been assigned a project to develop functional automated & regression testing for a rather large application that is currently in development but will hopefully be implemented within a year assuming the kinks can be worked out (and there are A LOT of kinks ). The application is developed by an outside company, my group tests/supports this application for the users within our company and then interact with the vendor for fixes, upgrades, etc.
I have a software background, so I am comfortable with coding, using coding standards, etc. But I'm actually new to industry development since I'm only an intern working in an IT department of a non-IT company.
I've had the luxury of being allowed to research Rational and play around with creating & running scripts/cases/suites before starting and am now ready to get serious about my project.
I would like to use any experience and advice that anyone has to off in regards to functional testing with Rational Robot and TestManager.
--Do you prefer to organize your tests into test suits from test cases/scripts within TestManager or run everything from a "main" script in Robot that will make calls to other scripts as needed?
--Is there a difference between running a script through TestManager versus running the same script through Robot?
--Which is easier?:
1) To develop/maintain one general script with conditions that run only if certain parameters are set.
2) Develop different scripts (with a lot of copy & paste) for each condition.
I would love to hear back from you all on what does/doesn't work and any other advice you are willing to offer.
Re: Using Robot or TestManager to run a project?
I would suggest to use multiple small robot scripts rather than one big script.
I currently do not have the time to describe the reasons, but if you want, you can contact me by E-Mail.
