So how do testers get more respect

Following on a bit from the rubbish I've been sending to Vanessa, how do the
group feel testers can gain more respect within their organizations.
At my last place when the first wave of redundancies came, they put numbers
to go on each job area.
The consultants, analysts and developers all said
"Get rid of more testers and keep more of us, when business picks up you
will need our skills, then you can just get some more testers"
All three groups were of the opinion that they could do anything a tester
could, and they could back this up with the fact that they had been asked to
help testing in the past.
They also were of the opinion that their skills were more valuable.
What skills do you think testers have that make them indispensable.
After the redundancies had been sorted out I decided to leave anyway, about
6 months later they got rid of 50% of the remaining staff and now have no
