    Rational courses: Functional vs Performance

    Hello,

Has anyone taken both the RTTS "Rational Team Test Fundementals for Functional Testing" and the one for Performance testing, and if so, are they so similar in content that you would choose one or the other? or are they different enough to both be worthwhile?

    Thanks

They are completely and utterly different.
Although both functional testing and performance testing are driven by the same products (Robot, Test Manager), the technology used (scripting/recording) is completely different. I am not even addressing the differences between functional testing and performance testing.

I would rate the performance testing part more suitable for somebody with significant technical (systems/network/development) knowledge.

I agree with Roland completely. I really wasn't very impressed with the TeamTest fundimentals course (or certification). Nothing that an intelligent person wouldn't figure out on thier own. The Performance class is a good springboard into using the tool for performance testing.

I will caution, however, that taking the class, and/or passing the cert says very little about being able to actually do the job in the field. The classes and certs are about using tools, not about doing the job.

Re: Rational courses: Functional vs Performance

Thanks for your input. The reason I ask is that I have taken the Team Test for Performance testing and have used Robot in functional testing for over a year now, and am wondering if I should take the Team Test for Functional training. An RTTS rep said that the courses were similar (though the course outlines weren't,)and it would be better to take the Team Test Expert Level Automation (TELA) course; however, I don't know if they were just trying to sell a new course and maybe I would get a different response from a Rational rep.

How true this is for almost all certifications that can be attained by just studying hard on the tool's capabilities.

Typically, I do not rate certifications nor the attendance of a course very high if I am interviewing candidates for a job.

If you have been using robot for over a year and if you know anything about VB at all, I'm not sure you will get much out of either class. The link below is the course discription for the TELA course. If those are things you need/want to learn take the course. But if you can already navigate robot, record, playback and use datapools, I wouldn't recommend the other course.
